The Keys to Communication Exhibit offers insights from the patient's perspective as well as the professional's to provide a deeper understanding of how essential communication is to our everyday lives, and how the services of speech and hearing professionals help make that communication possible.
- Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology: The exhibit covers the history of the UNC Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences as well as brief histories of the professions. Features a collection of antique hearing aids, from ear trumpets to wearable devices, such as tie pin aids, up to Bluetooth technologies and cochlear implants. Information on screening for hearing loss and ways to prevent hearing loss
- Research, Teaching, and Clinical Practice Activities of the UNC Speech and Hearing Faculty:
- Literacy materials for Head Start programs
- Alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) devices
- Best practices for teaching autistic children
- Helping people with neurogenic disorders, such as aphasia and dyspraxia, achieve goals for functional living
- Outreach efforts in Guatemala and Mongolia
- Bilingual language development
- Genetic research in Fragile X syndrome and other neurodevelopmental disabilities
